Hand-Made, Traditional American Wooden Flagpoles since 1985

About our Wooden Flag Poles, and "Why Wood?"

<< Return to Hennessy House® Wooden Flagpoles

Hennessy House® Wooden Flag Poles are designed for landscaping applications where aluminum or fiberglass poles are incongruous with traditional sites or for settings of historic significance. Typical of these are town squares or parks, historic public places, traditional business districts, schools and universities, traditional style country clubs, heritage homes and municipal buildings, monuments, marinas (nautical style wooden poles), and the like.

Wooden flag poles date back to the days of wooden ships where seaport craftsmen, skilled in shaping spars for masts and yard arms, turned out the earliest poles in spar yards. Select, vertical-grain conifer species were used, and much of the shaping and finishing work was accomplished by hand. Later, huge lathes turned poles up to 100 feet.

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, metal poles and later fiberglass poles became favored because they could be manufactured much more economically in quantity, and they were perceived to be more durable and "modern".

Still, the grace, charm, and look of wooden flag poles with their square bottom portion and decorative octagonal or other ornamental features are revered for site-work where the perfect "finishing touch" helps authenticate the project.

Happily, this "finishing touch" can now be specified in a Hennessy House Wooden Pole that meets today's accepted structural requirements for wind loads and safety. That's because we utilize a marine lamination system to join select, vertical grain Douglas fir tapered pole members to construct a hollow, tapered "box" as the "stock" from which our poles are fashioned. This is shaped to replicate the old solid poles and yields a structure that has high vertical tensile strength yet is comparable in weight to aluminum and fiberglass poles.

A By-Gone Era Returns...

Now Hennessy House is recreating this by-gone standard for today's caring homeowner or building owner with authentic hand-made wooden poles that replicate the classic design. Our poles are made of select Western Douglas fir, turned on a custom pole lathe and hand-painted with several coats to a gloss white finish.

Shipped directly to your home or work site, they're ready for in-ground installation. This includes a rust-free, heavy duty steel anchoring base (poles hinge at bottom to lower for easy maintenance). Plus, all poles come with a complete accessory package at no extra charge.

Hennessy House American Wooden Flag Poles feature an exclusive lighter weight stave design to promote maximum tensile strength. With a wall thickness of 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches on shorter poles and 1-7/8 inches on taller poles, and laminated with our special water-impermeable bonding agent, their strength is unsurpassed by today's metal or fiberglass home poles.

A Word to Historic Preservationists and Restoration Contractors...

If a property is documented to have had a wooden flag pole that no longer exists (or one that cannot be adapted for re-use), a replacement wooden pole should be of the following length:

Customary Pole Heights:

Single story building 15 ft. - 20 ft.
Two story building 24 ft. - 27 ft.
Three story building 35 ft. - 40 ft.

Please contact us about your restoration project. We can replicate most wood pole designs if you have photos or drawings.

Finish Variations...

Poles may be ordered in a natural wood finish coated with a satin finish clear marine-grade sealer. Custom colors are also possible with submission of color sample. Please inquire for cost quotes on finish variations.
