Hennessy House Provides Banner Poles for Balboa Park

In 1996 Hennessy House Wooden Flagpoles was chosen by the City of San Diego to provide two replica "banner poles" to adorn the rooftop of its refurbished House of Hospitality in its world famous Balboa Park.

These two Douglas fir poles were made using our unique glue-laminated, lighter weight design to replace the original poles documented to have been placed on the House of Hospitality's roof when it was built for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.

The poles utilize a unique semi-free-turning double hanging yolk to display the V-shaped vertical banners. The poles were designed and constructed to withstand windloads of up to 90 MPH allowing for a partial "spill" of the wind as the yolks pivot.

This National Historic Landmark building is in the Spanish Colonial Style. The original structure was remodeled for the 1935-1936 California Pacific Exposition. Architect Richard Requa patterned the remodeled House of Hospitality after the Museum in Guadalajara, Mexico.

In 1998 the House of Hospitality received a coveted National Preservation Honor Award, the only building in San Diego to receive the designation.
